Accurate, real-time data from Rugged Controls’ tension monitoring system helps validate anchor performance aboard the Rachel Carson research vessel.
In a series of anchor tests to assess holding power conducted aboard the Rachel Carson research vessel in the Chesapeake Bay, Fortress Marine Anchors turned to a rental system from Rugged Controls to ensure precise tension measurement. With real-time data logging and proven field performance, the RL-05 Running Line Tensiometer (RLT) played a key role in evaluating anchor strength under challenging conditions.
Rental System Provides Turnkey Testing Capability
To ensure accurate, high-resolution tension monitoring, Fortress rented a complete Rugged Controls system featuring the RL-05 RLT, an RPC-90x Programmable Display, and WinchDAC software for real-time data acquisition and analysis. The equipment was installed on the aft winch of the Rachel Carson, an 81-foot University of Maryland research vessel.
“The installation of this unit on the aft winch and the set-up of the supporting hardware went smoothly and performed flawlessly,” said Brian Sheehan of Fortress Marine Anchors. “The RL-05 performed superbly during our extensive anchor holding power tests.”
About the Anchor Holding Power Test
The four-day test was conducted in soft mud conditions typical of the Chesapeake Bay. Serving as an independent reviewer was Chuck Hawley, former VP of Product Testing at West Marine. Robert Taylor, a 45-year U.S. Navy expert in anchor design and soil mechanics, also consulted on the project.
The test evaluated the Fortress FX-37 anchor against ten heavier steel competitors, many of which were new-generation international imports. The USA-made FX-37, weighing just 21 lbs (10 kg), outperformed all competing anchors, some by a factor of 2–5x, at both the 32° and 45° soft mud settings.
